overview

Atlas provides complete integration of video content in a community support or knowledgebase site, with out-of-the-box support for YouTube, Vimeo and Viddler video hosting. The integration of video into support sites and knowledgebases is essential with so many users today expecting to find ‘how to’ videos when they are self-learning and resolving their own problems.

Under the Video tab users will see a list of the videos that have been linked to the site. Atlas does not directly store videos but holds metadata linking to where they are such that from an end-user perspective the linkage is seamless and the videos might as well be in the Atlas database.

With Atlas’ Relevant Replies technology, videos can be used as responses to questions - no need to find it, type in hyperlinks to its location or type out words to indicate what the response is. What is more likely is that with mandatory tagging of all content for relevance, the user will find the video in the first place and the question need never be asked.

To add, edit, delete or archive a video, users must be logged in with administrative privileges.

Adding videos

atlas_add_video.JPG

To add a video to the Atlas collection, users upload it to one of the 3 supported hosting providers, and take note of the id that the video is given on that site. In Atlas, the users click on the “add video” link and will be taken to the “add video” page where they will be prompted for a mandatory title for the video, an optional description of the video and the Id from the hosting site. The video Id is the last part of the URL in the link to where it is hosted. For example, if the video were hosted at YouTube.com and the URL to play the video was:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCzfR65cR_I

then bCzfR65cR_I is the video Id to specify in Atlas.

In addition, users may specify the width and height of the video. We recommend a width of 480 and a height of 390.

As with all content in Atlas, videos must be associated with tags so that they can easily be found and their relevance determined.

Editing Videos

Videos cannot be edited directly in Atlas, but users may edit the associated metadata of title, description, video Id, width and height. To edit this metadata, users hover over the edit iconEdit Iconand select “Edit” from the drop-down list. This will open the video page for editing so that information can be amended. Video metadata can only be edited by the creator of the video or an administrator of the site.

Deleting Videos

To delete a video, users hover over the edit iconEdit Iconand select “Delete” from the drop-down list. Atlas will prompt for confirmation that the video is to be deleted and if the action is confirmed Atlas’ reference to the video (not the video itself, which will remain on the site where it s hosted) will be removed from the database. Video references can only be deleted by the creator of the video or an administrator of the site.

Archiving Videos

To archive a video, users hover over the edit iconEdit Iconand select “Archive” from the drop-down list. Atlas will prompt for confirmation that the video is to be archived and if the action is confirmed the video references will be removed from view but will not be deleted. No action will affect the video in the location in which it is hosted. Videos can only be archived by the creator of the video or an administrator of the site. Site administrators can restore an archived video.
